* * PEEP Programme

The PEEP Learning Together programme is structured but can be used flexibly within organisations. It is based on the implications of research findings: that the first years of a child's life are crucial for later development,
and that the key role of adults who care for the child during those years must be affirmed and supported.

The programme has four elements:

The ORIM learning framework sets out a practical way for parents/carers to develop relationships with their children and encourage learning. This recognises that children benefit from:
Opportunities to learn;
Recognition and valuing of their early efforts and achievements;
Interaction with adults  to talk about what they do and how they feel;
Modelling by adults of behaviour, attitudes and activities.

The PEEP curriculum focuses on five main developmental areas:
self-concept and learning dispositions (such as perseverance and curiosity), oral language, reading, writing and numeracy. They are explored through nine themes at each age level from birth to four, eg 'Babies making choices', 'Play patterns', 'Home-made books'.

The Core Activities of the programme are:
- songs and rhymes, sharing books and stories, and activities.
Singing, talking and playing together helps develop children's listening, talking and later literacy, and strengthens relationships.
- talking time - discussion of a theme relating to children's development, giving parents/carers a chance to share experiences together.

The Learning Together materials have been developed to help support parents/carers and practitioners to use PEEP ideas and activities. They consist of folders, DVDs and songbooks/CDs.
